Reciprocal museum memberships: common questions

Always call ahead. Rules change and each museum sets its own. Lists last checked October 2026.

What is a reciprocal museum membership?

Many museums, zoos, gardens and science centers belong to reciprocal programs. If your membership card shows a program's logo, other places in that program may let you in free or at a discount. Each program publishes its own list, and each place sets its own rules.

How do I know which programs my membership includes?

Look for program logos printed on your membership card, such as NARM, ROAM, ASTC or the ACM red “R”. Many museums include reciprocal programs only at certain membership levels, so check your level on your museum's website.

What does the ASTC Travel Passport get me, and what is the 90-mile rule?

ASTC Travel Passport gives free general admission at participating science centers and museums (368 places on this site). Special exhibits, planetarium and large-screen theater shows are not included. It is not valid at places within 90 miles (straight line) of your home museum or of where you live. How many people are covered depends on your membership level. Official list: ASTC Travel Passport Program.

What does a NARM membership get me?

NARM (North American Reciprocal Museum Association) members get free or member-rate admission at 1,565 participating places, plus member shop discounts. Your card must show the NARM logo. Guests are not covered, and the host museum sets how many people get in, typically 2. Some museums exclude members of museums within 15 or 50 miles; these are marked on the official NARM list.

What is the difference between NARM and ROAM?

They are separate programs with separate lists, and many art museums belong to both. NARM covers 1,565 places and ROAM (Reciprocal Organization of Associated Museums) covers 659. ROAM gives member-rate (usually free) admission for at least 2 people. Some ROAM museums exclude members of institutions within 25 miles. Check which logo is on your card.

Does my zoo membership work at other zoos?

Children's museums in the ACM Reciprocal Network give 50% off general admission for up to 6 people, including the cardholder. Your card must show the red “R” Reciprocal Network logo. This site lists 212 participating museums. Official list: ACM Reciprocal Network.

What is Bank of America Museums on Us?

Bank of America, Merrill and Bank of America Private Bank cardholders get free general admission for the cardholder on the first full weekend of each month at 248 participating museums, with a photo ID. Special exhibitions are excluded. Official list: Museums on Us.

Which membership should I buy before a trip?

Search the city you're visiting on the map, then search a specific place you want to visit. If your card doesn't cover it, the site lists which programs that place honors and the cheapest memberships we've checked that include them. Because many programs exclude places near your home, a membership from a museum far from where you live is sometimes the cheapest way in. Always confirm with both museums before you buy.

Is this information always right?

No list is perfect. Every listing comes from the program's own official list and shows when that list was checked (most recently October 2026). Programs change and each museum sets its own rules, so always call or check the museum's website before you go.
